3 Letter sound and letter recognition apps for the little ones

My little monkey, A3, sure is crazy about learning letters! Maybe it's because he has these fun iPad games to play with...

1 Starfall ABCs
This app isn't as flashy as the Elmo app I will describe in a moment, but it's usually A3's top pick. The gumballs for "G" seem to be his favorites.

More than just letter sounds, the game introduces other concepts like "on and off" for the letter "o."

Distinguishing one letter from another is a skill tested during this game, where he sorts "o" and "n."

And this game shows the alphabet in order, in maze form.

2 Elmo Loves ABCs
Full of videos, activities and coloring sheets for each letter plus several versions of the alphabet song, this app is beefy and comprehensive. I think they took clips from a gazillion Sesame Street episodes and organized them into this colorful game for iPad.

3 All About Reading's Letter Sounds App
This one I don't have yet, but it's free so I'll download it today. I just got an email about it from All About Learning; this free app will take the place of the Letter Sounds A to Z CD ROM that is currently part of the All About Reading Pre-Reading program (affiliate link).

  1. Thanks for sharing! I am thinking I need to incorporate our iPad a little more. We did some phonics work on it last week and I swear that helped more than any teaching I have done. Great list and I am checking out those apps now :)

    1. Thanks for your comment! Is hard to know how much iPad time is right, don't you think? I want to use the fun apps, especially since he does learn, but don't want to overdo it. I try to do a max of 30 minutes a day and we didn't start until he turned 2 two.
